Abstract
1,198,632. Cyanine dyes. ILFORD Ltd. 24 Nov., 1967 [28 Nov., 1966; 19 Dec., 1966], Nos. 53172/66 and 56607/66. Heading C4P. [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises trimethene cyanine dyes of the formula wherein either R 1 or R 2 is alkyl, and R 3 and the other of R 1 and R 2 is alkyl, aryl, sulphoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, aralkyl, carboxybenzyl, or -(CH 2 ) n SO 2 NHCOR 20 or -(CH 2 ) n SO 2 NHR 21 (where n is 1-6, R 20 is alkyl and R 21 is alkyl or aralkyl); Q is phenyl which may be substituted with halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; and D completes a benzimidazole, benzoxazole, benzothiazole, benzoselenazole or 3H-indole ring, the benzo-rings of all of which may be substituted; and X is an anion. The dyes may be prepared by the usual condensation reactions. The symmetrical dyes may be prepared by reacting the 2-methyl-benzimidazole with chloral alcoholate in a basic medium.
