Abstract
1,198,579. Abrasive webs. KURASHIKI RAYON K.K. 6 Dec., 1968 [9 Dec., 1967; 29 Jan., 1969], No. 58037/68. Heading C4V. A process for preparing an abrasive web comprises bonding abrasive particles to a backing web using as bonding solution an alkaline aqueous solution of a copolymer of a vinyl ester and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or an alkyl ester thereof. The bonding solution should be applied directly to the backing web and as a second coating solution to the abrasive particles bonded to the web. The second solution may be more dilute than the first. The unsaturated carboxylic acid may be monobasic or dibasic and crotonic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid and itaconic acid are specified. The vinyl ester may be vinyl acetate or vinyl propionate. The alkali may be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium hydroxide or triethanolamine. A water-soluble precondensate of a thermosetting formaldehyde based resin may be present in amount 25 to 100 parts or 200 to 350 parts per 100 parts of copolymer. Suitable precondensates are a urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde or resorcinol-formaldehyde.
