Abstract

Ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, potassium chloride or calcium superphosphate or mixtures thereof are prevented from caking by adding thereto (a) a solution in a concentrated aq.soln. of a surfactant of polyvinyl acetate, its partially saponified products insoluble in water or acetals of 1 to 4 carbon atoms of polyvinyl alcohols or (b) a mixed aq. soln. of a surfactant and polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid or its salts, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl sulphonic acid or its salts, polyvinyl methyl ether, polymethacrylic acid or its salts, water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resins, water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resins, polyethylene glycol, carboxymethyl cellulose or methyl cellulose. The treated substance(s) is dried to produce particles having a branched configuration. The weight ratio of polymer-surfactant may be from 1 : 10 to 10 : 1. The polymer and surfactant can be sprayed on to or mixed with the cakeable substance(s). The Specification illustrates the addition of polymer or surfactant alone to the cakeable substance.ALSO:Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, potassium chloride or superphosphate of lime or mixtures thereof are prevented from caking by adding thereto (a) an aq. soln. of a surfactant and polyvinyl acetate, its partially saponified products insoluble in water or acetals of 1 to 4 carbon atoms of polyvinyl alcohols or (b) a mixed aq. soln. of a surfactant and polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid or its salts, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl sulphonic acid or its salts, polyvinyl methyl ether, polymethacrylic acid or its salts, water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resins, water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resins, polyethylene glycol, carboxymethyl cellulose or methyl cellulose. The treated substance(s) is dried to produce particles having a branched configuration. The weight ratio of polymer-surfactant may be from 1:10 to 10:1. The polymer and surfactant can be sprayed on to or mixed with the cakeable substance(s). The Specification illustrates the addition of polymer or surfactant alone to the cakeable substance.
