Abstract

[Also in Divisions D1-D2] A process for the production of a yarn comprises extruding at a temperature from 170‹ to 190‹ C., preferably 175‹ to 188‹ C., a foamable polypropylene comprising from 5-25% by weight of a volatile substance as blowing agent to produce a strand or ribbon of foamed polypropylene, drawing the strand so that it becomes orientated substantially in the direction of extrusion, and subjecting the drawn foamed polypropylene to forces to break down the walls of the foam and produce a three dimensional structure of interconnected fibre elements. The break down of the foam walls may be accomplished by means of a turbulent stream of fluid or other mechanical means. Several examples of suitable blowing agents are given. In a preferred embodiment, three strands as produced above are each twisted and then twisted together to form a three ply yarn.
