In a jig washer having a pulsation chamber 2 located in a water tank beneath a screen 1 with its upper closed end portion tapering in a direction towards the screen, the upwardly diverging space on each side of the tapering portion is subdivided by one or more guide blades 5 into upwardly diverging zones, whereby the velocity of the pulsating water current is maintained uniform through the portion of screen above each zone. Compressed air may be supplied to the chamber 2 to provide pulsations to the water. Alternatively, the pulsations may be impacted by a reciprocating piston. The bottom of the chamber 2 is streamlined as at 4 and is spaced from diverging blades 6 which guide the water issuing from the chamber 2. As shown, the water tank is subdivided longitudinally into a number of compartments by partitions 3, a chamber 2 being provided between each pair of partitions and extending the whole width of the respective compartment. Relative dimensions are given.
