A jig of the type in which water is caused to oscillate through screens 5 by the action of compressed air, comprises a tank 1 containing a compressed air chamber 2 with the screen 5 arranged symmetrically on either side, the chamber 2 having a narrow upper part with vertical walls 3 and a lower part which widens going downwardly, the lower edges of its walls being formed by streamlined hollow members 8. These members supply water through manually adjustable valves 9, and a splitter plate 12 effectively divides the tank into compartments 4, the supply of water to which can be varied individually to suit the amount of material on each screen, e.g. in response to the pressure below each screen. The chamber may also be divided by transverse partitions, so that the supply of water and compressed air can be varied along the length of the tank. The width of the upper chamber part 3 should be at most one-third, and preferably one-eighth of the total width of the screens.
