Abstract

1,197,112. Regulating. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 27, 1968, No.4391/68. Heading F1B. An exhaust brake valve, of a compression ignition engine, operated through a solenoid 1, is controlled in response to engine or vehicle speed and to accelerator pedal position, the valve being closed if the accelerator pedal is released when the speed is above a predetermined value, the engine fuel supply being simultaneously cut off. The solenoid 1, which may control an air valve of a pneumatic operating system for the brake valve, is in series with a micro switch 7, operated by the accelerator pedal, and a speed responsive switch 3, 4 operated by a relay 5. A generator 11 produces a voltage at a frequency varying with engine or vehicle speed and a detector device in the relay 5 closes the switch 3, 4 relay a predetermined frequency is reached. If the accelerator pedal is released at high speed, switches 7, 3 and 4 are closed and solenoid 1 closes the brake valve and shuts off the fuel. When the speed drops below the predetermined valve, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, solenoid 1 is de-energized and the brake valve opened and fuel supply resumed.
