Abstract
1,196,337. Textile-treating compositions. BURLINGTON INDUSTRIES Inc. 11 Dec., 1967 [27 Dec., 1966; 13 June, 1967; 7 Nov., 1967; 15 Nov., 1967], No. 56231/67. Headings C3G, C3P and C3R. [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A water-swellable but water insoluble synthetic polymer used in the treatment of textiles is one which absorbs at least 550% by weight of water when immersed in an aqueous detergent solution. details of Which are given, for 2 minutes at 140‹ F. The polymer may be made from acrylic or methacrylic acid, alone or in admixture with ethylene or ethyl acrylate. The polymer may be applied to the textile material in the form of an aqueous emulsion or dissolved in a non-aqueous solvent. The treating composition may also contain an aryl stearic acid, e.g. phenyl, naphthyl, xylyl or tolyl stearic acid, an aminoplast precondensate or other reactant imparting durable press effects, e.g. formaldehyde or a reaction product thereof with urea, thiourea, a cyclic ethylene urea, melamine, ethyl carbamate, a uron, triazone or triazine, or a phenol blocked isocyanate, wetting agents, plasticizers, e.g. ethyl hexyl phthalate, diisooctyl oleate, tri-2-ethyl hexyl trimellitate, triisodecyl trimellitate, trioctyldecyl trimellitate, triiso-octyl trimellitate, diisodecyl adipate, tricresyl phosphate, diiso-octyl sebacate, dicaprylphthalate, n-octyl-n-decyl adipate, di-2- ethylhexylazelate, triphenyl phosphate, butyl and butyl glycollic phthalate, methyl and ethyl glycollic phthalate, dihexyl azelate, tetrahydrofurfuryl oleate, diethylene glycol dipelargonate, dibutyl sebacate, butyl benzyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, epoxy tallate, diiso-octyl azelate, diiso-octyl adipate, diiso-octyl phthalate and tri-(n-octyl/ decyl) trimellitate, softeners and catalysts, e.g. zinc or magnesium chloride or nitrate, 2-amino- 2-methyl-1-propanol hydro chloride, triethanolamine hydrochloride, ammonium chloride, tartarate, citrate formate, oxalate, or nitrate, ammonium ethyl phosphate or ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. In Examples 5 and 6 fabrics comprising cotton and polyester fibres treated with the polymer compositions are aftertreated (a) with ozone followed by acrylic acid monomer and then dried and cured or (b) with acrylic acid monomer and a persulphate and then dried and cured to effect graft polymerization.
