Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C1] Amphipathic stabilizers for dispersions of particulate solids in aqueous liquids in which the particles are insoluble comprise a polymeric backbone provided by a random copolymer of alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomers with a molecular weight of at least 10,000 optionally containing ionizable groups which is per se insoluble in the aqueous liquid, the polymeric backbone carrying at least 2 pendent chain-like non-ionic components of molecular weight at least 350 solvatable by the aqueous liquid and distributed along the said backbone at intervals of less than 30 covalent links, the weight proportion of components solvatable by an aqueous liquid being from 20 to 80% of the stabilizer molecule. The stabilizers in the examples are prepared as follows: (1) to (4) styrene is copolymerized with a monoacrylic acid ester of an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer (monomer C) or a monoacrylic acid ester of a methoxy poly (ethylene oxide) (monomer B); (5) to (8) methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid are copolymerized with monomer B or monomer C and the copolymer is treated with triethylamine, n-butylamine, ammonia, sodium hydroxide or a poly(ethylene oxide) substituted tertiary aliphatic amine ; (9) methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate are copolymerized with monomer C and the resulting copolymer is treated with H 3 PO 4 and triethylamine; (10) a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and monomer C is treated with acrylic acid and (11) to (13) a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer is reacted with (i) monomethoxy-terminated ethylene oxide propylene oxide copolymer or ethylene oxide homopolymer, (ii) n-butyl alcohol and (iii) butylene oxide and (iv) triethylamine. Aqueous dispersions are prepared which contain one of these stabilizers and titania coated with an organic amine or inorganic oxide, zinc oxide or calcium carbonate.
