Abstract

1,196,247. Stabilized aqueous dispersions of synthetic polymers. M. R. CLARKE, L. FILIPOWICZ, and I. H. McEWAN. 8 Nov., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 50216/66. Headings C3G, C3P and C3R. A stable essentially non-ionic dispersion of synthetic polymer particles having a mean diameter of less than 0À5 micron in an aqueous liquid in which the disperse polymer is insoluble contains an amphipathic stabilizer comprising a polymeric backbone provided by a random copolymer of alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomers, with a molecular weight of not less than 10,000 and optionally containing ionizable groups which is per se insoluble in the aqueous liquid, the polymeric backbone carrying at least two pendent chain-like non-ionic components of molecular weight at least 350 solvated by the aqueous liquid, the weight proportion of components solvated by the aqueous liquid being not less than 20% nor greater than 80% of the stabilizer molecule, said stabilizer associating with and entropically stabilizing the disperse polymer particles. In Examples 1 to 5 a stabilizer comprising an organic solution of a methyl methacrylate/monoacrylic acid ester of poly(ethylene oxide-propylene oxide) is present during the production of aqueous dispersions of polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate or a copolymer of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and styrene or methyl methacrylate. A stabilizer comprising a copolymer of styrene and a monoacrylic acid ester of poly(ethylene oxide-propylene oxide) or a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and the acrylic acid ester of a methoxyterminated poly(ethylene oxide) is used in Examples 6 and 7 in the production of dispersions of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymers. In Examples 8 to 10, a styrene/methacrylic acid/acrylic acid ester of poly(ethylene oxide-propylene oxide) copolymer stabilizer is used in the production of dispersions of copolymers of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate with styrene or methyl methacrylate and in Examples 11 to. 13 the same stabilizer, except that methyl methacrylate replaces the styrene, is used in the production of dispersions of copolymers of 2- ethylhexyl acrylate with vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate or styrene. A stabilizer the same as that of Example 1, except that styrene and 2 - hydroxypropyl methacrylate replace the methyl methacrylate, is used in Example 14 to stabilize a 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/styrene copolymer dispersion. In Example 15 a stabilizer made by grafting acrylamide and 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate on to a methyl methacrylateglycidyl methacrylate copolymer treated with methacrylic acid is used to stabilize a 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer dispersion and in Example 16 a polymethyl methacrylate dispersion is stabilized by a methyl methacrylate - allyl methacrylate copolymer grafted with N-vinyl pyrrolidone. A 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer dispersion is formed in Example 17 concurrently with the in situ production of a stabilizer comprising a 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/monoacrylic acid ester of poly(ethylene oxide-propylene oxide) copolymer. In Examples 18 to 20 a stabilizer is prepared by reacting a methyl methacrylate-maleic anhydride copolymer successively with (1) a monomethoxyterminated ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer, (2) ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether and (3) butylene oxide and used in the production of dispersions of polymethyl methacrylate,. methyl methacrylate/t.-butyl aminoethyl methacrylate copolymer and a methyl methacrylate/ ethyl acrylate/t. -butyl aminoethyl methacrylate copolymer. A 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/styrene/ t.-butyl aminoethyl methacrylate copolymer dispersion is produced in Example 21 using a stabilizer prepared by reacting a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer successively with (1) a monomethoxy-terminated poly(etbylene oxide), (2) n-butyl alcohol and (3) butylene oxide.
