Abstract
1,195,946. Variable area wings. A. P. PEDRICK. 21 Nov., 1969, No. 23614/68. Headings B7W and B7G. A fan wing comprises an upper member a having a convex top surface to give aerodynamic lift and a flat bottom face, and below it a number of coaxially pivoted flat thin plates c, which have some overlap when the wing is extended, but which may fold back to provide a compact stack of surface-to-surface plates. An aileron d is provided on the upper member. The wing is applied to a large number of aircraft including medium speed cruising aircraft (Fig. 1, not shown), wheel-less craft (Fig. 11, not shown) transport craft (Fig. 16, not shown), VTOL craft (Fig. 19, not shown), multiwing craft (Fig. 25, not shown), conventional winged aircraft (Fig. 29, not shown) arrow-shaped aircraft (Fig. 32, not shown), carrier aircraft for smaller craft (Fig. 46, not shown), rockets (Fig. 50, not shown), and also to a number of "motor vehicle" like aircraft (Figs. 64-100, not shown).
