Abstract

1,106,305. Variable camber aerofoils for boats, aircraft &c. E. M. WRIGHT. 15 June, 1966 [24 June, 1965], No. 26792/86. Headings B7B, B7G and B7V. A variable camber aerofoil for use as the sail of a boat or wheeled vehicle, the wings of an aircraft and for keels, rudders or propellers comprises a flexible skin urged into the shape of the aerofoil by at least one aerofoil forming assembly associated with a supporting structure 47, 49 disposed within the skin, the assembly being formed of a number of differently shaped plates interconnected by pivots, springs and links, whereby movement of the assembly causes different peripheral portions of said plates to engage the interior wall surface of the skin to thereby vary the camber of the aerofoil. To ensure that the skin is kept taut as the camber is varied, a spanwise strut 71 is urged by springs 83 and compression members (not shown), against the trailing edge of the skin. The skin is strengthened by spanwise extending channelled ribs 57 secured thereto by screws, Fig. 11 (not shown), opposed ribs being biased toward each other by a plurality of springs, Fig. 12 (not shown). When it is desired to vary the camber the forward strut 47 of the supporting structure is rotated. Rotation of the strut 47 causes a nose plate 107 of the aerofoil forming assembly to be rotated which initiates and causes movement of the other plates of the aerofoil forming assembly such as neutral plates 171, 173 and a tail plate longitudinally and rotatably movable about the fixed strut 49. When the aerofoils are used as a sail to propel a boat, Fig. 1 (not shown), two aerofoils are mounted vertically one behind the other, each on a separate turntable, the two turntables in turn being mounted on a larger turntable rotatable on a catamaran-type hull. The hull is provided with a cockpit from which the rotation of the turntables and the variation in aerofoil camber are controlled.
