Abstract

1,195,751. Type-justifying apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 8 Jan., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 1004/68. Heading B6W. Coded signals from a reader 3 representing unjustified text are retained in a justification computer 5 and the total line length represented by the accumulated signals is entered into a register 7. The length in register 7 is constantly compared with a pre-set line length set in register 15 by a comparator 11. When an overflow is detected the total input line length less the last word is used by computer 5 to calculate the interword spaces for a justified line. If the calculated value for an interword space is equal to or less than a pre-set value the line is justified and sent via register 23 to output printer 25. If the calculated value is greater than the pre-set value a circuit 21 is pulsed to double the length accumulated in register 19. The result of this doubling is compared at 29 with pre-set line length in register 15. If the result of this comparison is equal to or greater than the pre-set line length computer 5 justifies the line using a new maximum interword space. If the result is less than the pre-set line length an "insert-hyphen" device 35 is operated. A display of the last word in the line may then be provided for insertion of the hyphen by an operator and the interword spacing is re-calculated incorporating a part of the last word and the hyphen. If this spacing is less than the maximum permitted the line is automatically justified and passed to printer 25. If the spacing exceeds this maximum, then using the maximum interword spacing the computer recalculates the inter-character spacing with no limit on the maximum inter-character spacing and justifies the line.
