A strip perforating apparatus includes a counter for counting the number of width units of information encoded (e.g. by a keyboard), including inter-word spaces; means responsive to the counter for indicating the occurrence of counts representing first and second justification limits (corresponding to the number of width units which fit into a line space at predetermined maximum and minimum inter-word spacings); means responsive to the occurrence of the first justification limit and to the occurrence of a subsequent interword space or natural hyphen to cause the line to be automatically terminated at the inter-word space or hyphen and justified; display means for displaying at least the most recently fed-in characters; means for indicating to an operator the occurrence of the second justification limit when there has been no operation of the automatic line termination means; and manually operable means permitting the operator to split the displayed characters with a hyphen at a point to be determined by the operator and to cause the line to be terminated at the hyphen and justified. The apparatus may include means responsive to the occurrence of an inter-word space following the occurrence of the first justification limit to transfer from a memory to the line all stored characters up to the interword space, means responsive to a further inter-word space before the second justification limit to cause the first inter-word space and all succeeding stored characters to be entered in the line, and means responsive to the second limit to enter into the line in place of the last inter-word space an end of line code. The manual hyphenation may be effected with a number of switches corresponding to successive positions between successive ones of the most recently entered characters. The switches may be keys on the keyboard used to feed in character information, the keyboard being locked when the second justification limit has been reached without any automatic line termination. Third and fourth limit indicating devices may be provided defining a range within the first and second justification limits where justification will occur if possible.
