Abstract

1398882 Printers C LEBAN and L STANGER 19 May 1972 23790/72 Heading G4H [Also in Division B6] An ideographic or other non-alphabetic character is represented using a plurality of symbols each defining at least one element of the character and a plurality of synbols each defining a juxtapositional relationship between elements of the character, the symbols being decoded to determine the identity of each element and the position of one element relative to another, the decoded symbols being transformed into an assembly sensible as a character. A Chinese character is entered on an alphanumeric keyboard by entering a numeral identifying the gross morphology followed by a series of vowel-consonant pairs, each pair identifying an element of the character. Elements with the consonant first in the pair are generally characterized by left orientation, horizontally, orthogonality and those with the consonant second are generality characterized by right orientation, vertically, slantness. The vowel indicates relative position in the character field. The entry of elements is in a standard order with respect to position, containment and overwriting relations, but with a most important element (that having a certain position depending on the particular gross morphology) first. Other symbols are also keyed in to define the character. The elements selected are displayed on a CRT in an optical photographic printer, the sizes and positions of elements being adjusted as successive elements are entered. Two apparatuses as above may control each others printers as well as their respective printers. Storage may be provided between the keyboard and the conversion circuitry. An alternative printer uses a row of type-wheels, each having a respective element in various sizes, the row being shifted longitudinally to select the element and rotated to select the size (the latter according to the identity and total number of the elements in the character). The paper is moved in two dimensions to effect positioning within the character area.
