A screen 30, Figure 7, e.g. for an oscillating screening machine, is tensioned and fixed on a screen frame 1-5, Figure 1, .by securing one of its ends to a cross-member 2 of the frame and its opposite end to a .retaining member 9 which is secured to one or more tensioning arms 10 pivotable on the frame ,so that the member 9 can be swung out of the plane of the screen frame, Figure 8, the member 9 in use being secured to the longitudinal members I of the frame. This arrangement permits the screen to be changed without having to remove the entire frame from the screening machine. Each tensioning arm 10, Figure 3, consists of a tube 1 la welded at one end to the member 9 and enclosing tensioning cup-springs 12 suported against an abutment body 13 which bears against a .piston-like element 16 pivotable at 11 to the screen frame. When the screen is being used, the retaining member 9 is secured at each end to a lug 6 on each frame member 1 by means of a bolt 21, Fig. 4, which passes through a block 23 welded to the member 9 and extends through a longitudinal slot 20 in the lug 6. Cup springs 24 between the square head 22 of the bolt and the block 23 is tensioned to a greater or lesser degree by tightening of a nut 25 thereby to vary the resistance to horizontal displacement of the member 9. When the screen is to be replaced from the (frame, the member 9 is first forced downwards by means of a jack 32, Fig. 7, which is supported against an abutment 33, so that the nuts 25 can be slackened. When the nuts have been removed the jack 32 is cranked so that the position shown in Fig. 8 is reached in which the screen 30 can be removed and replaced. The jack .is then actuated to lower the member 9 to its original position and the nuts are put on and tightened.
