Abstract

1,195,315. Magnetic heads. R.C.A. CORPORATION. 13 May, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 22555/68. Heading G5R. A magnetic head, e.g. for transverse-scan video tape recorders, is manufactured by:- (a) Taking C-cores 13, 14 of single crystal ferrite material, such as 16% Mn; 52% Fe; 4% Zn, and lapping or grinding the mating surfaces. (b) Compressing the cores and a chromium, molybdenum, tungsten or alumina gap spacer 17 under a tapering force profile in a vise-like structure 25, 26. (c) Locating solder glass 15, 18 adjacent the sides of gap 17 and back gap 16 and heating the assembly with an oxy-acetylene torch to secure the parts together, any glass reaching the record-contacting surface 24 being subsequently removed by lapping, and (d) Providing a record or playback winding through aperture 19.
