Abstract

1,194,436. Rotary joints. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 6 May, 1969 [8 May, 1968], No. 21817/68. Heading F2G. A union capable of allowing relative rotation between tubular members whilst maintaining a seal between the interior and exterior of the members, comprises outwardly directed flanges 3, 4 on the ends of the tubular members 1, 2, a centring member 11 having cylindrical portions 9, 10 extending into, e.g., recesses 7, 8, the ends of the members 1, 2 and providing a seat for an annular member 13 of elastomeric material encompassing the centring member and disposed between the flanges, an annular washer 14 of polytetrafluoroethylene or like low surface friction material interposed between the member 13 and the flange 4, and means for drawing the members 1, 2 axially towards one another with the member 13 in pressure contact with the flange 3 and the washer 14. As shown, the washer 14 has an annular depression 15 in which the 0-ring 13 beds, and the flanges are drawn together by a collar 18 screwed on to a collar 17 which may be split and the halves held in fixed relationship by a screwed collar 16. A split, wavy, spring-metal ring 19 is disposed between the flange 4 and collar 18.
