Abstract

Materials, preparation of.-The leaves of the coco-nut palm are rendered suitable for weaving into cloth, hats, &c. by boiling in water, splitting, and tearing into strips, which are boiled for one to two hours in a solution of 5-8 lb. of sodium carbonate in 100 lb. of water. The strips are then washed and placed for one to three days in a bleaching-solution comprising 100 lb. of water, 1-3 lb. of sodium peroxide, 1-2 lb. of potassium oxalate, and 50-100 grms. of sulphuric acid, the material preferably being disturbed from time to time. The strips are then washed and dried in the shade while exposed to an air current, and, when dried, roll up from both sides and become smooth and semi-transparent. The finished threads are strong, light, elastic, waterproof, and of a good feel.
