A stretcher 20 is supported by and between a pair of telescopic arms 22, 44, 46 cantilevered from spaced stanchions 12 each having a vertical series of holes 27 to selectively receive a spring-loaded pin 28 for locking the arms at a desired height. Each arm includes inner 22, intermediate 44 and outer 46 sections. The inner section 22 is pivoted at 34 to a bracket 23 which slidably engages flanges 21 on the stanchion 12. A pin 24 is selectively engaged through apertures 25 in the bracket 23 and through the inner section 22 to vary the relative angular disposition of the bracket 23 and inner section 22. The pin 28 is removable from a hole 27 by operating a trigger 31 acting through a cable 29 on the pin 28. The pivot pin 34 is engaged in a slot 33 and is centrally surrounded by a sleeve 35 with an integral flap 36 biased by a spring 37 to a vertical position in which it holds the pin 34 in the top of the slot 33. An enlargement 40 on the cable 29 displaces the flap 36 on operation of the trigger 31 to free the pin 34 for movement along the slot 33 and thereby prevent binding of the bracket 23 on the stanchion 12. The telescopic arm is lockable in its fully retracted and intermediate positions by a spring loaded pin 55. The ends of the stretcher poles 47 are supported by flanged parts 51 of the outer arm section 46. The outer pole 47 is releasably secured by a clamp 53. The arrangement has particular application as a detachable fitting in aircraft, the stretchers being supported in tiers.
