Abstract

1,193,631. Functional fluids. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG.) Ltd. 14 March, 1967 [14 March, 1966; 2 Sept., 1966; 23 Nov., 1966], Nos. 11178/66, 13128/67 and 13129/67. Divided out of 1,167,899. Headings C4X and C5F. [Also in Division C1] A functional fluid for lubrication, hydraulics or heat transfer comprises a natural or synthetic lubricating fluid and 0À1 to 10 wt. per cent of a condensation product of a 1-hydroxyalkyl-1,1 diphosphonic acid with an alkylene oxide which can be prepared as described in Specification 1,115,043. Preferred condensates have the formula wherein R is an organic group, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a methyl or halomethyl group, n<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>2</SP>, n<SP>3</SP> and n<SP>4</SP> are each integers, m is zero or an integer and each X is hydrogen or an alkyl or an acyl group. Suitable alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and epichlorhydrin. Suitable lubricating fluids are mineral oils, hydrocarbon polysiloxanes, phosphate esters, phosphite esters, thiophosphite esters and dialkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids. A fluid for cutting and working metals, ceramics and ceramic/metal composites comprises 0À005-10 wt. per cent of the condensate and a hydroxyllic solvent such as water, or a water-miscible di- or poly-hydroxy alcohol having up to 10 carbon atoms such as ethylene glycol, which may also contain a water-miscible monohydric alcohol. The condensate is also used as an aid for grinding cement (see Division C1).
