Abstract
1,193,544. Jointing. JONES CRANES Ltd. 21 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9658/68. Heading B3V. [Also in Division B8] In a method of constructing a crane jib structure section 4, Fig. 2, which includes mounting jointing members 18 on (four) longitudinally extending main struts 11, the jointing members 18 are bonded at 17, Fig. 3, 4, to the main struts 11 either by a brazing operation at a temperature below that at which the metallurgical properties of the members are adversely affected or by chemical bonding with a structural adhesive. Bracing struts 12 extend between the jointing members 18 and are bonded at 17 in sockets 20 in housings 19. Each end of the main struts 11 is provided with a lug 13 being part of an end fitting 14 having a spigot 15 bonded at 17 into the end of the strut 11 and providing means by which the section 14 is adapted to be coupled in, or as, a crane jib. Shoulders 16 on the end fittings take compressive loads to avoid undue shear stress on the bonding 17. Alternatively the end of the strut 11 may be fitted inside the end fitting 14 (not shown). Provision may be made in the housings 19 to facilitate the bonding of the parts, e.g. holes 25, Fig. 8, can be provided for the injection of structural adhesive under pressure, together with internal grooves or channels 26 to facilitate the flow of adhesive over the surfaces to be bonded. The bracing struts 12 may alternatively be bolted to the jointing members 18, Fig. 12.
