Abstract

A method for the production of substantially homogeneous metal comprises the steps of separating a rolled or forged ingot of the metal in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the original ingot into high-grade edge portions and a low-grade central portion and subsequently forming these portions separately. The metal is formed into an ingot rolled or forged into an elongate slab which is divided along two places which both extend longitudinally of the slab and on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the slab so as to produce two relatively highgrade edge portions and a relatively low-grade central portion.
