Abstract
1,192,856. Degassing steel. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. Oct. 3, 1968 [Oct. 3, 1967], No. 47020/68. Heading C7D. In a process and apparatus for the continuous degassing and deoxidation of molten steel the latter is admitted through a barometric inlet pipe into the upper part of a vacuum vessel where it is subjected to electromagnetic stirring before being discharged from the upper part of the vessel through an outlet pipe. Degassing may be facilitated by the introduction of finely divided solids such as carbon or ferrosilicon, or of inert gases such as argon, the latter being introduced along the inlet leg. As illustrated, molten metal in launder 5 passes through inlet leg 6 into vacuum vessel 2, where it is stirred by coil 8 and may be heated by elements 11, before leaving by pipe 7. The system is self-regulating in that any violent evolution of gas from the fresh incoming metal increases the pressure in chamber 2 and thereby reduces the rate of inflow of metal. The degree of degassing may be controlled by adjusting the intensity of stirring.
