Abstract

1,192,565. Mechanical seals. BORGWARNER CORP. 19 July, 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 33264/67. Heading F2B. A mechanical seal 11 for a shaft 15, where it extends through a housing 13, comprises a sealing ring 27 urged into rubbing sealing contact with a surface 25 by an annular member 29 of silicone rubber compressed between the ring and a support and providing a static seal therebetween. As shown in Fig. 1, the member 29 is compressed between the ring 27 and a radial wall 37 of a U-section shell 31, press fitted in a bore 21 of the shaft housing 13 and having protrusions 41 engaging notches (49, Fig. 3) in the ring 27. The shaft 15 is a pump shaft and the surface 25 is formed on an impeller 23. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the elastomeric member (119) is compressed between the sealing ring (127) and a wall (120) of the housing (113) and tabs (149) on the ring engage slots (141) in the housing.
