Abstract

1,192,555. Piston and connecting-rod assemblies. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. 31 July, 1967 [24 Aug., 1966], No. 37943/66. Heading F2T. In a piston and connecting rod assembly of a two-stroke internal combustion engine comprising a gudgeon pin 5 secured to the piston 4 and journalled in a plain bearing 3 in the connecting rod small end 2, in order to ensure adequate lubrication of the bearing 3, the thrust load thereon is relieved during a part or parts of the engine cycle by struts 9 located between thrust surfaces 8 and 10 on the gudgeon pin 5 and connecting rod 1 respectively, the surface 8 being displaced from the gudgeon pin axis 5B so that during operation the distance between the surfaces 8 and 10 varies, whereby during said part or parts of the engine cycle the struts 9 are compressed and exert a force in opposition to the gas pressure load on the piston. The gudgeon pin is secured to the piston by bolts 6 and the thrust surfaces 8 and 10 are formed by hemi-spherical sockets in flat surfaces 7 on the gudgeon pin and abutments 11 on the connecting rod respectively. In the embodiment shown, the sockets 8 are on the side of the gudgeon pin axis 5B remote from the piston crown 4A so that the struts are in compression and oppose the bearing load when the connecting rod is in the top dead-centre and lower dead-centre regions. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the sockets (8A) are nearer the piston crown (4A) than the gudgeon pin axis (5B) so that the bearing load relief occurs in the half piston stroke regions.
