A yarn guide for a tufting machine comprises a series of elements 21a having retention means 21 b which abut adjacent elements so that a yarn 24 can be pulled downwardly into an enclosed space 23 but is prevented from being removed upwardly. The elements are formed in either clear or opaque plastics and have spacers 22 therebetween. In an alternative embodiment the the elements are formed as individual hooked pieces of spring steel wire, the hooks forming the abutting retention means. Retention means can be provided on all or alternate elements.
