Abstract

1,192,254. Polyethylene terephthalate filaments. SOC. RHODIACETA. 12 June, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 28014/68. Heading B5B. Polyethylene terephthalate filaments have a contraction of more than 5%, exhibit a ratio of the integrated intensities of the X-ray diffraction spots corresponding to the planes (001) and (105), as a function of tenacity expressed in grams per denier to percentage elongation, represented by a point situated within the area A, B, C, D, E of the diagram of Fig. 1. Preferably such filaments have a contraction of more than 20%, and a modulus of at least 130 g.p.d. They may be made by extrusion of continuous filaments from a molten mass of linear synthetic polymer, the filaments being (a) cooled to a temperature of T 1 which is above 50‹ C. and at least 5‹ C. above the second order transition temperature T G of the polymer but is not greater than the initial orientation temperature To; (b) positively forwarded at a speed V 1 higher than the extrusion speed by contact with driven rotating surfaces kept at a temperature of substantially T 1 ; (c) brought to a temperature T 2 between T G and ambient temperature; and (d) positively forwarded at a speed greater than V 1 by contact with driven rotating surfaces kept at a temperature of substantially T 2 . A method of determination of the initial orientation temperature To is described. In Fig. 2, when the filaments have reached the temperature of T 1 , they are forwarded at speed V 1 by the supply system consisting of two rollers heated at temperature T 1 , rotating in opposite direction, as shown at 1 and 2. They are then cooled to temperature T 2 in the zone between roller 2 and roller 3, and are then forwarded by driven stretching roller 3, associated with idler 4, at speed V 1 . The filaments are thereby stretched. An applicator roll 5 applies a finish to the filaments from bath 5A as they pass between stretching roller 3 and idler 4, and after passage over guide rolls 6 and 7 the filaments are wound in known manner.
