Abstract

1,192,107. Breaking wire. CONTROL DATA CORP. 30 Aug., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 41431/68. Heading B3E. [Also in Division H3] Severance of insulated conductive wires arranged in spaced parallel relationship for threading the apertured cores of a magnetic storage matrix is effected by tensioning the wires and applying localized heating sufficient to reduce the tensile stress to an extent that the wires break, the severing process causing the wire ends to be formed with a tapered shape which facilitates their subsequent passage through the core apertures. Fig. 2 shows a matrix of previously threaded cores 26 which are located by suction in a vacuum box 29, the wires being secured by clamps 24, 28 after threading. The wires are insulation-coated copper originating from spools 12 and are positioned in spaced parallel relationship by guides 16 and 20. Tension is applied by operating a pneumatic device 32 to grip the wires and operating a pneumatic device 30 to displace a tensioning device 18. A further pneumatic device 36 is operated to bring a preheated electrical heating device 22 into proximity with the wires, the device including wire spacers 23. When the wires break the form of the wire ends is as shown in Fig. 3, the tapered shape facilitating the passage of the wires through a matrix of cores held in the vacuum box when the wires are advanced by feed rollers 34.
