In a typewriter having a printing head which rotates about one axis and tilts about another the type-selecting means includes an endless flexible member e.g. belt 31 trained around the head or around a pulley rigidly connected thereto. In one form, the printing head comprises two members 19, 20 with part-spherical surfaces carrying circumferential rows of type 21, 22. The members 19, 20 are removably fixed to an axle 25 rotatable in the arms of a forked member 32 the base 34 of which is integral with a hollow shaft 35 rotatable in a carrier member 37. A toothed pulley 28 is fixed to the axle 25 and is engaged by a toothed endless belt 31 which can be driven by a pulley 55, Fig. 7, to rotate the printing head about the axis of axle 25 so as to bring a selected type into line with the printing point. After such operation the shaft 35 is rotated through actuation of an angle lever 52 so as to bring the row of type containing the selected character into alignment with the printing point. The carrier 37 is now rocked by a cam 50, Fig. 6, and follower 49 about a pivot 45 and against the action of a spring 58 to move the printing head towards the platen for effecting printing. The printing head may be formed as a one-piece member (Figs. 1, 2) in which case the belt 31 engages a central toothed groove in the member. The printing head on the platen may move for letterspacing. Type alignment.-After the circumferentialselection movement, the members 19, 20 may be locked against further movement by a pin 39 engaging internal teeth 40 on the members, the pin 39 being attached to a rod 38 axially movable in the hollow shaft 35. In the ease of a one-piece printing head, the end of the rod 38 engages the central toothed groove. According to a modified construction (Fig. 8) circumferential rows of type are formed on a barrel-shaped printing-head (60), the head being rotated about its axis for a first selective movement by a belt (74) engaging an external groove situated beyond the rows of type. An internal bridge member (65) is pivoted to a bracket (67) and is rotated by toothed gearing (69, 70) to effect the second or rocking selective movement of the printing head for bringing the row of type containing the required character into alignment with the printing point. The bracket (67) is rocked about an axis (76) to effect printing.
