Abstract
1455499 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 18 Nov 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 49785/74 Heading B6F Type selection. A print head carriage carries cams 54, 110 whose axial movement is converted into rotation and tilt respectively of head 20. Each cam has a circular groove with parallel loops. Respective cam followers 42, 112 can be moved, whilst the cams 54, 110 rotate to follow a selected one of the loops or remain in the circular groove. Only the following of one of the loops causes axial movement of the cams. Selection of the loop to be followed on the cam 54 is controlled by actuator 32 which can move rod 38 to cause axial movement of cam 28. This movement of the cam 28 causes assembly 58 to pivot about pin 60 and thereby steer the follower 42. Track 100 is shaped to facilitate this steering. Selection of the loop 171, 172, 173 to be followed on the cam 110 is by energization of coil 118 which releases latch armature 120 to let spring 134 pivot the follower 112. Both cams 54, 110 have their loops branching at points staggered along the groove so that selection of a groove is determined by timed energization of actuator 32 and coil 118. The tilt mechanism between the cam 110 and head 20 is as described in Specification 22197/74. Case shift. Case shift is achieved by solenoid 80 rocking support 76 and causing pinion 76 to engage the other rack.
