A selective printer is provided with a typewheel 1, comprising a rotatable supporting cage including discs 3, 4 joined by a centre piece 2, the cage supporting eight type cylinders 6 mounted rotatably on shafts 7 which are provided with planetary gears 10, meshing with sun wheel 11 attached to a hollow shaft 12 co-axial with a hollow shaft 5 on which is mounted the supporting cage 2, which for character selection is rotated about its axis and displaced vertically to bring a selected character on one of the type cylinders 6 into printing position opposite a hammer 18, the character selection on the appropriate cylinder 6 being completed by rotation of the type cylinder through the planetary gears 10, 11. Character selection is effected by simultaneous rotation and displacement of the supporting cage 2 and rotation of type cylinders 6 on depression of a key (not shown). The supporting cage 2 is rotated by a gear 17 to present the appropriate type cylinder 6 opposite the hammer 18, and lifted or lowered by lifting or lowering of the shaft 5 by a bell-crank 34 to present one of the four rows of characters on the type cylinder 6 opposite the hammer and the character in the selected row of type cylinder 6 is presented opposite the hammer by rocking of bell-crank 32 which raises or lowers shaft 26 provided with a pin 25 engaging in slot 24 of an axially constrained hollow shaft 23 to transmit a rotary movement to the shaft 12 articulated to the shaft 23 by a pin and slot connection 21, 22. Shaft 23 is prevented from axial displacement by a fix pin 28 engaging in a groove 27 of a disc integral with the shaft and rotation of shaft 12 causes concomitant rotation of its associated sun gear 11 to rotate the planetary gears 10.
