Abstract
1,191,540. Detecting inclusions in hot workpiece. AUTOMATION INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 12, 1968 [Aug. 16, 1967], No.38371/68. Heading G1A. Inclusions in a hot workpiece are detected by determining the temperature difference between two locations on the workpiece. The investigation which may be by remote infra-red detectors is carried out whilst the metal is still hot after for example volting. The locations may be relatively transverse to the direction of motion, in line longitudinally, or, one on each of opposite faces. The workpiece may be force cooled by air or water to accentuate the difference from a spot in which the heat flow to a cooled area is reduced by an inclusion. Temperature measurements may be taken on a running strip above and below trowelwise of the area of cooling. Differences above or below a predetermined level, according to the system used, may effect a cutting control or give an indication. More than two locations may be investigated to detect for example both pipe inclusions and edge faults.
