Abstract
1,190,468. Photo-electric detectors. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 11 Nov., 1968 [10 Nov., 1967], No. 53350/68. Heading H1D. A photo-electric detector comprises a field emission cathode of a photo-conductive semiconductor which changes its emission in response to light to be detected. In Fig. 1 the cathode 1 has an end pointed by an etching process to a radius less than 0À1 microns and is supported on a bridge 2 which also serves as a heater for cleaning the point of the cathode before each operation, the lead-in wires 3 being disposed in a recess 4 adapted to contain liquid nitrogen for cooling the cathode. The tube includes an accelerating electrode 6, a channel multiplier 9 and an output electrode 10, and is provided with a window 8 of quartz or crystalline alkali halide for admitting infra-red radiation to be detected. Suitable cathode materials are In 2 S 2 and Sb 2 S 3 and the operating circuit includes accelerating potential sources 13, 15 and 16 and a decelerating potential source 14.
