Abstract

1,190,334. Making composite rod; rolling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 26 March, 1986 [3 April, 1967], No. 14414/68. Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division C7] In a method of forming a cast rod comprising copper accreted to an elongated core member, which includes the steps of continuously passing said core member 10 upwardly through molten copper 31 contained in a crucible 28, and removing the resulting cast rod from the crucible, the resulting cast rod is (1) cooled to a temperature at which it maybe mechanically worked without cracking, (2) worked mechanically to reduce its diameter and (3) cooled to below the temperature at which copper will oxidize in air, all of steps (1) to (3) being conducted in a protective atmosphere comprising hydrogen and nitrogen, so that oxidation of the cast rod is substantially inhibited. The said atmosphere comprises not more than 15% hydrogen by volume, and optionally may contain not more than 5% carbon monoxide, and the step (2) is carried out at 650-950‹ C., and the rod is cooled to less than 100‹ C. in step (3). Core rod 10 is drawn in die 12, the surface oxide coating removed in shaver 14, and fed via capstan 15, rolls 16, vacuum chamber 20 and nozzle 26 into crucible 28. Molten copper 31 is supplied to the crucible from furnace 32 fed with copper plates 35, heated by heaters 34, and supplied with a protective reducing atmosphere through pipe 48. The coated rod leaves the crucible through nozzle 52, is cooled (step 1) as by spraying with water at 54, subsequently rolled (step 2) at 66, cooled (step 3) at 67, and coiled in 69. The reducing atmosphere referred to is fed into the housings 58, 62, and 66, by the pipes 70. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 828,192 and 964,914.
