Abstract

1,197,352. Atmosphere control in dip-farming process. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 26, 1968 [April 4, 1967], No. 14413/68. Heading C7F. In a method of accreting copper on to a continuous, elongated core rod 10, wherein molten copper is supplied to a crucible 28 from a furnace 32 and the core rod is passed upwardly through said molten copper, an atmosphere is maintained above the melt in the furnace supplying said molten copper which atmosphere comprises 1-10% by volume H 2 , 1-10% by volume CO, and CO 2 in such quantity that the ratio CO 2 :CO is from 2:1 to 1:20, the remainder being an inert diluent, whereby the oxygen content in said melt is maintained at less than 20 parts per million. The rod 10 passes through drawer 12, shaver 14, over capstan 15 and through drive rolls 16 and nozzle 26 (via exhausted tube 20) into crucible 28 maintained at the required temperature as by electric induction heater 30. Cathode copper plates 35 are fed into furnace 32 heated by silicon carbide heaters 34, and supplied through pipe 48 with an atmosphere of the above-stated composition. The levels of molten Cu in 32 and 28 are adjusted by sensors 46 and 44, and an atmosphere of nitrogen is supplied in crucible 28 from 50 via pipe 49. On leaving the crucible, the coated rod 10 is cooled as by water spray 54, and passed via rolling mills to storage. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 829,192 and 964, 914.
