The rate at which polyester filaments and like structures can be drawn without minute cavities or " bubbles " forming in the filaments during the drawing step is increased by subjecting the filaments prior to the drawing step to a heat treatment step which is carried out at a temperature T (‹C) and during a time t (sec.) such that T = A-X.(log e t) in which, with a duration of heat treatment of 0À3 to 3 seconds, A has any value in the range 77À7 to 95À7 and X = 7À6, and when t = 3 to 3600 seconds, A has any value in the range 72 to 90 and X = 2À48 and, when t = 3600 to 200,000 seconds A has any value in the range 54À6 to 72À6 and X = 0À354. The drawing step may be effected under such conditions that the filaments are thereby oriented and may be effected at ordinary or at elevated temperatures. When the drawing step is carried out at elevated temperatures, it is immaterial whether the filaments are cooled between the heat treatment and the drawing steps or whether they are heated to the temperature required for drawing directly after the heat treatment step. Any method of heating the filaments may be used in the heat treatment step and the filaments may either be prevented from shrinking or may be allowed to shrink to a controlled degree (preferably not more than about 10%) during this step. The filaments may consist of polyethylene terephthalate. The heat treatment of the undrawn filaments &c. can be carried out in a hot liquid, preferably water, in a heated gas or vapour, by radiated heat, dielectric preheating, or by contact with one or more heated surfaces. The heat treatment increases the speed at which the filaments may be drawn without minute cavities forming in them. The polyester used in all the examples is polyethylene terephthalate.
