Abstract
1,190,002. Autoxidation of n- and cycloparaffins. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 19 July, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 22423/66. Heading C2C. Secondary n-alkyl hydroperoxides are prepared by contacting a paraffin with oxygen at an elevated temperature in a reactor, continuously cycling the paraffin from the reactor through an extractor, contacting the paraffin with an extracting solvent which is a mono- or di- or polyhydroxy alcohol or glycol ether of #5 C atoms, separating the extracting solvent from paraffin and recovering the hydroperoxides. The hydroperoxides may be disproportionated in a number of ways to give either a mixture of ketone and sec. alcohol as product or chiefly ketone as product. The ketones may be further oxidized by contact with oxygen at elevated temperatures to give carboxylic acids. The initial paraffin preferably has from 12-20 C atoms. The autoxidation is carried out at 120-200‹ C., preferably 160-180‹ C. The disproportionation is carried out in the presence of a catalyst.
