1,174,199. Alcohols and ketones. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 19 May, 1967 [20 May, 1966; 17 March, 1967], No. 23469/67. Heading C2C. In a process for the preparation of alcohols and ketones by the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons (5-8 C) e.g. cyclohexane in a liquid phase by a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a boron compound, followed by hydrolysis of the reaction product separation and dehydration of the solid boric acid with recycling to the reaction zone, and fractionation of the organic phase to separate the alcohol and ketone, the solid boric acid before dehydration at 200‹ C. is purified by contacting with (a) a saturated aliphatic alcohol or ketone (1-4 C) at 0‹ to 100‹ C.; or (b) water at from 50‹ to 95‹ C. and dissolving in the water from 0À5 to 10% of the dry weight of the boric acid. The preferred alcohols and ketones for the working stage (a) are methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, t. butanol acetone and methylethylketone which may be admixed with up to 100% of water, and a temperature of 10‹ to 50‹ C. is preferred. A final wash with water may be included and the washings distilled to recover any boric acid. Examples describe the treatment of boric acid derived from the oxidate of cyclohexane, nhexane and cyclo-octane.
