Abstract

1,151,287. Continuous oxidation of hydrocarbons. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. 9 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 11185/67. Heading B1X [Also in Division C2] Hydrocarbons are oxidised by charging them continuously into a reactor 1 in the liquid phase, and oxidising them with a gas containing free oxygen; continuously removing a portion of the reaction medium such that there always remains in the reactor a quantity of oxidation product permitting the development of the reaction at a satisfactory rate; subjecting the removed fraction to at least one extraction in extractor 12 with a polar solvent which is a good solvent for the oxidation products and only slightly miscible or rendered slightly miscible with the starting hydrocarbon, with or without a purification by washing with an alkaline solution in washer 3 and with water in washer 7; separating the oxidation products from the polar solvent and re-cycling the hydrocarbon by line 14 to reactor 1. The extracted oxidation products pass by line 15 to evaporator 17 for removal of solvent. In Examples, methylcyclohexane, cyclohexane, decalin, a mixture of decalin and alkyl-decalins, cyclohexyl benzene, isopropyl-naphthalene, cumene and hexadecane are oxidised to give principally hydroperoxides or peroxides. Water or aqueous methanol is used as the) polar solvent. The oxidation products are preferably separated from the polar solvent by a rapid distillation.
