Abstract

1,189,654. Apparatus for applying liquids to railway track rails. PORTEC (UK) Ltd. 12 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 23495/66. Heading B7J. [Also in Division Fl] Apparatus for applying liquid, e.g. a friction promoter such as ethyl caprylate, to a rail 45 of a railway track, comprises a pump 1 adjustably clamped to the rail 45 and having a plunger 15 actuated by engagement with passing train wheels to draw liquid from a reservoir or other supply into a primary chamber 3, thence to nozzle pipes for delivery on to the rail head, and a self-draining secondary chamber 19 which becomes filled with liquid after a predetermined number of successive actuations of the pump by the locomotive wheels, so as to delay delivery of the liquid until the trailing wheels of the train actuate the pump. The plunger 15 carries a piston 4 and a flexible valve element 17 cooperating with holes 16 in the piston 4, the delivery stroke being executed by a compression spring 48.
