Abstract
1,080,162. Railway stops. SHAWTREW & SMITH Ltd. May 13, 1964 [Feb. 19, 1963], No. 6576/63. Heading B7L. Stop means for rail vehicles has a member 1 pivoted to a chain 3 passing around sprockets 4, 5, a rod 15 being pivoted at 16 to sprocket 4 and to the rod 13 of piston 9. The piston 9 has passages 11 for the flow of fluid and the cylinder 10 is connected to reservoir 12. The member 1 has rollers 24 and runs on platform 6 which may be retractable to withdraw member 1 from the path of vehicle axle 2. In operation, the axle 2 engages and moves member 1 and chain 3, the resulting movement of rod 15 and hence piston 9 progressively increases and consequently due to restricted fluid flow through piston the resistance to movement of member increases until the vehicle is brought to rest. At the extent of yielding movement, the member 1 swings down a ramp 26 clear of axle 2. A compression spring device 17 acted upon at one end by an abutment 22 on the chain, and pivotally anchored at its other end 21 returns the chain to its initial position after a vehicle has been arrested.
