Abstract
1,189,187. α-Haloacrylonitriles. BORGWARNER CORP. 25 Oct., 1967 [7 Nov., 1966], No. 48598/67. Heading C2C. α-Haloacrylonitriles are obtained in a vapourphase dehydrohalogenation process by heating α,#-dihalopropionitriles to 50‹ to 250‹ C. and passing them through a reaction zone containing a catalyst. Specified catalysts are the halides and oxides of Cu, Pb, Ca, Zn, Cd, Fe, Co, Bi, Ti, Mn, Ba, Cr and A1 and surface-active materials such as silica gel, activated carbon, activated alumina and activated clay. Other C 3 halogenated nitrites and acrylonitrile are produced as by-products.
