Abstract

[alpha]-Haloacrylonitriles are obtained in a vapourphase dehydrohalogenation process by heating [alpha],#-dihalopropionitriles to 50 to 250 C. and passing them through a reaction zone containing a catalyst. Specified catalysts are the halides and oxides of Cu, Pb, Ca, Zn, Cd, Fe, Co, Bi, Ti, Mn, Ba, Cr and A1 and surface-active materials such as silica gel, activated carbon, activated alumina and activated clay. Other C 3 halogenated nitrites and acrylonitrile are produced as by-products.
