Abstract
1,188,906. Evaporators, film type. HITACHI Ltd. 8 March, 1968 [5 April, 1967], No. 11598/68. Heading B1B. Volatile material is evaporated from a viscous liquid by introducing it through inlet 13 into a heated casing 7 (Fig. 4) which surrounds a rotating roll 27 comprising a series of steps each of which has a tapered surface; the liquid is spread as a film on the surface of the left-hand step of the roll and is transferred by scrapers 28 to the following steps over the surfaces of which the liquid also moves in film-form. Residual liquid is discharged through outlet 29. Vapour flows out of the casing through an outlet (not shown) which may be connected to a vacuum pump. Casing 7 is heated by jackets 8, 12. The thickness of the film of liquid on the steps can be adjusted by axial displacement of the roll. Fig. 6 shows an evaporator in which the liquid is transferred, to the right, along the tapered surfaces of the steps when the two rolls 30, 31 are rotated in opposite senses at different speeds.
