Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the poor or thick coating phenomenon in the coating of a coating liquid on a flexible strip material, e.g., photograph film, etc., by subjecting an undercoat layer containing a surfactant to a discharge treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Prior to coating, a coating head 8 and a reduced pressure chamber 7 are separated from each other by an operating means 11 in the direction of the arrow mark (b). After a web 2, e.g., a film, etc., is advanced at a given speed in the direction of the arrow mark (a), a corona discharge treatment is applied to the undercoat layer of the web 2 by applying high voltage generated by a high voltage generator 4 between an electrode 5 and a backup roll 6 while separating the coating head 8 and the reduced pressure chamber 7 from the web 2. Then, at a time when the web 2 thus subjected to the discharge treatment passes through the coating head C, the coating head 8 and the reduced pressure chamber 7 are moved toward the direction of the arrow mark (c) to allow them to come near the web 2 and then coating operation is made, assuring uniform coating.
