In a machine for cleaning clockwork mechanisms by agitating them in a cleaning liquid bath and subsequently rotating them in drying operation, means is provided for imparting to the mechanism in the cleansing phase vibrating to and fro motion in a particular direction combined with a continual change of position transversely of said direction. The machine comprises a support 14 for the mechanisms which is immersed in cleaning liquid in a jar 34 and is carried by a spindle 12, 13 to which is secured a hollow head 9 having and extension 15 surrounded by a ball bearing 16. The latter is housed in a ring 17 mounted by pivot pins 18, 181 Fig. 1 (not shown) in the walls of a channel member 21. During the cleaning phase a ball bearing 7, or an eccentric pin 6 or a cylinder 3 driven by an electric motor 1, engages in a recess 8 in the head 9 to rotate the spindle 12, 13 whilst simultaneously causing it to oscillate about the pins (18, 18<SP>1</SP>). For the drying operation the spindle 12, 13 is lowered by tilting the member 21 about a pivot 28 so that the ball bearing 7 is disengaged from the recess 8, and an aperture 11 in the spindle head 9 is engaged with a coupling ring 5 on the cylinder 3 so that the support 14 is rotated without oscillation.
