1,188,089. Skinning cashew nut kernels. ANGLO AMERICAN CORP. OF SOUTH AFRICA Ltd. 19 Nov., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 54835/68. Heading A2Q. Cashew nut kernels are peeled by forming them into a bed and subjecting the bed to a blast of air from at least one side. As shown, apparatus for this purpose comprises a pair of endless perforated bands 4, 5 having juxtaposed runs spaced sufficiently to accommodate the largest dimension of the kernels such that a bed consisting of juxtaposed kernels may be formed by feeding the kernels in a single layer from a hopper 14 by means of a vibratory feeder 15, the bed being confined laterally by spacers (12, Fig. 3, not shown) and being caused to travel between lower and upper manifolds 9, 10 by continuously driving the bands in synchronism. Nozzles (11, Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) are provided along the transversely extending portions of the manifolds to direct jets of air through the perforated bands into the bed of kernels, the nozzles being staggered so that the jets do not interfere with each other. Complete peeling of all the kernels is ensured by first drying the kernels to reduce their moisture content to 2¢-3 per cent, then passing the dried kernels through a series of machines as shown with intermediate sorting stages to remove from the peeled kernels any broken fragments, the air pressure used being increased in each succeeding machine from 3 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> to 8 or 9 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> in the final machine, whereby the number of broken kernels is said to be reduced to a minimum.
