Abstract

1,187,771. Hydrogen-resisting plant. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 April, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 19215/66. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C7] Chemical plant used in a process which involves the presence of hydrogen or the formation of hydrogen by corrosive action such as the production of urea, vinyl acetate, phenol, or terephthalic acid, is characterised in that equipment exposed to the hydrogen is made of Ti, Zr, Nb or Ta or an alloy of one or more of these having corrosion characteristics comparable with those of the metals themselves and at least part, and preferably the whole, of the surface of which is anodised. Preferably the protective anodic film is of thickness 200 to 4000A, typically 2000 to 3000A and as described the film is an oxide and the metal oxidised contains less than 0.1% of iron and other base metals. Examples are given of anodising a cylindrical pressure vessel with end domes, a tube, all of Ti, and a Ti tube plate heat exchanger (see Division C7).
