Abstract

1,186,389. Extraction of bauxite. VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM-WERKE A.G. 10 Nov., 1967 [6 May, 1967], No. 51359/67. Heading C1A. A process for the continuous extraction of bauxite with a caustic solution of sodium aluminate comprises conducting a suspension of bauxite in the solution through a tube of substantially constant cross-section at a velocity of 0À5 to 7 m./sec., preferably 2 to 5 m./sec., at a volumetric throughput rate of 0À01 to 0À5 cub. m./metric ton of alumina per day and heat - ing the suspension to a temperature at which digestion occurs so that digestion is substantially complete when the suspension leaves the tube. The heating is preferably carried out in stages in an apparatus described in Specification 1,186,390, the first stage being heated by vapour from a decompression plant, the second by contact with a jacket containing digested suspension and the third by fresh heat by means of steam, organic heat carrier or a salt. Throughput of the process is preferably 10 to 160 cub. m./hr. of suspension at a temperature of 200‹ to 300‹ C.
